HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Heavy fighting raged on the streets of the northern Somali town of Lasanod on Wednesday and Somaliland troops were shelling a number of neighborhoods in push to drive local forces seeking reunion with Somalia from the key city.
Elders and local officials repeatedly accused Somaliland troops of indiscriminately shelling civilian houses, hospitals and mosques, forcing residents to flee their neighborhoods.
Hundreds of people have been killed since the fighting erupted early this month and many more wounded, who are being treated at hospitals in the capital Mogadishu and those in the neighboring town of Garowe.
Local forces told media that Somaliland troops launched a counter-offensive on Tuesday from three directions despite growing calls for calm and days after separatist region’s government declared a unilateral ceasefire.
