A fierce battle took place this morning, Tuesday, February 21, on the outskirts of Las Anod. The war that has been going on for the past three weeks between the local people and the forces of the separatist Somaliland administration has caused many losses.
Many families have already fled the city and the shelling by the Somaliland separatist troops is still going on. They have not succeeded in taking control of the city from the SSC forces who are from the tribes of the area.
The areas that were hit by the shelling this morning include the houses of local traditional elders who have already declared that they support the unity of Somalia.
The communities living in the Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn regions said that they are not part of the Somaliland administration. Somaliland has claimed independence from Somalia since 1991 but has never been recognized internationally.
Clashes have forced more than 185,000 people to flee their homes in the contested town in the Sool region, the UN’s emergency response agency said.
