Addis Ababa, October 12, 2023 (Addis Walta) The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Ambassador Meles Alem said that Ethiopia’s diplomatic engagement in the first quarter of the year had been successful, in both bilateral and multilateral platforms
Ambassador Meles Alem, in his bi-weekly press briefing, highlighted a series of successful diplomatic engagements, on bilateral and multilateral platforms, to enhance Ethiopia’s partnership with countries and institutions in the first quarter of 2016 E.C.
Ethiopia’s relationship with the United States and the European Union (EU) is gaining momentum, according to the spokesperson.
Concerning Ethiopia’s multilateral diplomatic successes, Ambassador Meles discussed in detail the outcomes of the diplomatic engagements during the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York, and the Group of 77 plus China (G77+China) Summit held in Havana, Cuba.
He further detailed the Ethio-US consultations held in order to strengthen bilateral relations in the fields of democracy, human rights, good governance, investment, trade, and development cooperation, as well as defense and security.
Speaking of multilateral diplomacy, Ambassador Meles explained that the President of the United Nations Security Council and a group of representatives of member countries of the Council held fruitful discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, on peace and security issues in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa region.
In addition, Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Demeke held productive meetings with more than 30 leaders of various countries, international organizations, UN bodies, as well as with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, during the UN General Assembly session.
As Ethiopia is a diplomatic hub, various countries, including Croatia, Colombia, and Nicaragua, have shown interest in opening their diplomatic missions in Addis Ababa, according to the MFA of Ethiopia.
