MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s army on Friday recaptured the strategic central town of El-bur after Al-Shabaab militants had withdrawn without a gunfight, the country’s military chief Ibrahim Sheikh Muhyadin said.
It came after weeks-long military mobilizations and advance backed by US and Turkish drones.
Troops encountered a car bomb attack on the outskirts of the town, which has been in the hands of militants for the last 6 years. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, saying it killed 59 soldiers. There has been no independent confirmation of the assertion.
Somali government and clan militias are also advancing into the nearby town of Galhareeri in the same region.
