In a swift and coordinated operation executed on Friday, the Somali National Army struck a resounding blow against the al-Shabaab terrorist group in the town of Buq Aqable, situated in the Hiran region. The operation, backed by international partners, yielded a significant victory as 18 militants were neutralized and 20 vehicles were left completely destroyed.
The operation’s success adds to a series of recent triumphs against the notorious terror group al-Shabaab, as the government intensifies its campaign to eliminate the group’s presence from the country. In the past week alone, two other al-Shabaab-controlled towns, Bulo Fulay in the Bay region and Galhareri in Galgudud, also bore witness to the might of the Somali National Army and its international partners.
The operation in Buq Aqable followed a well-coordinated strategy that dismantled al-Shabaab’s infrastructure in the town. The assault targeted three key positions, leaving no room for the militants to regroup or retaliate. The first site to be neutralized was a garage that housed a fleet of 20 vehicles. Swift and precise strikes obliterated the entire fleet, rendering each vehicle unusable and incapacitating a critical logistical asset for the terrorist organization.
The second target, an administration post for al-Shabaab’s Khawaarij faction, witnessed the elimination of five terrorists, including a high-ranking commander. This strike struck a blow to the group’s leadership, further weakening its operational capabilities and chain of command. The third objective of the operation involved the eradication of an al-Shabaab checkpoint situated on the town’s outskirts. All militants present at the checkpoint were eliminated, effectively disrupting one of the group’s avenues for imposing control and extorting the local population.
These recent victories are part of an intensified campaign orchestrated by the Somali National Army, working in collaboration with international partners, to root out the al-Shabaab threat. Over the past week, more than 10 locations have been targeted in precision strikes, leading to the deaths of numerous terrorists, the destruction of explosives depots, the confiscation of arms caches, and the obliteration of several vehicles across different regions.
As the government’s resolve to dismantle al-Shabaab’s stronghold gains momentum, the country braces itself for more decisive operations. The latest successes reaffirm the determination of the Somali National Army and its partners to bring lasting peace and security to the nation, while pushing back against the specter of terrorism that has long haunted the region.
