MOGADISHU [SMN] – The prime minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre held the first meeting with the new Independent Constitution Review and Implementation Commission.
The PM and team members discussed what to accelerate important work regarding the Constitution’s completion which took over 15 years with millions of dollars invested.
“With this renewed focus on the constitution, we can expect to see increased progress towards advancing our country’s democracy,” said the PM in a statement on Sunday.
The NCC leaders during their five meetings agreed on the delimitation of the powers of the Federal and State levels, Federalizing the justice and National Security structure.
During a constitutional review process, it is constitutionally mandated and imperative to include FMS and the Somali public at large in the revision and amendment process.
The Horn of Africa country is currently governed by a Provisional Constitution, adopted on August 1, 2012, after 30 years of conflict that began after the toppling of a military regime.
Somalia which is on the path to recovery needs a Constitution to accomplish the movement towards one-person one-vote to allow the population to pick the leaders of their choice.
