MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least one soldier was killed and three others wounded in a drone attack by the Islamic State group targeting Puntland security forces operating in a rugged terrain near the commercial port city of Bosaso in northeastern Somalia, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.
The First Person View (FPV) drone assault struck a temporary base of regional security forces in areas recently reclaimed from ISIS militants, marking yet another in a series of such attacks. However, regional officials previously reported that a significant number of explosive drones have been intercepted and neutralized by security forces since the launch of military operations earlier this month.
Puntland authorities have reiterated their resolve to continue operations until the militant group is driven out of the mountainous areas surrounding Bosaso, where vehicle access is virtually impossible, and entry can only be made on foot, complicating efforts to secure and clear the vast, challenging terrain.
In a prior statement, regional officials appealed for international support in their battle against the Islamic State group, expressing frustration over the lack of assistance from the federal government whose President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has yet to publicly acknowledge or commend Puntland’s ongoing efforts against the terror group.
