MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia has formally announced its candidacy for a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026-2028 term, drawing upon its storied history of Pan-Africanism to champion the continent’s collective cause.
Historically, Somalia has been a resolute supporter of African nations striving for liberation from apartheid and colonialism, and it proudly served as the host of the African Union headquarters for 17 years. Today, Somalia seeks to build on this legacy, positioning itself as a staunch advocate for African unity and peace in its campaign for a seat on the council.
The Somali government emphasized the strategic importance of its potential leadership within the African Union Peace and Security Council at this pivotal moment, especially given its current membership on the United Nations Security Council. Somalia highlighted its extensive experience in conflict resolution, underscoring its role as the host of several peacekeeping missions. This expertise, the government contends, would significantly bolster the council’s efforts to advance peace and security across the continent.
Moreover, Somalia pointed out that it has yet to serve on the African Union Peace and Security Council since its inception in 2004. The Somali government argued that its inclusion would promote greater inclusivity and ensure more equitable representation of all African nations. By securing a seat, Somalia believes it could further strengthen the African Union’s peace and security framework and contribute to a more balanced approach to tackling the continent’s pressing challenges.
