MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia and Egypt are poised to engage in crucial consultations in Cairo from January 10 to 12 regarding Egypt’s potential involvement in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). These high-level discussions come after both Somali and Egyptian officials indicated that Cairo might play a pivotal role in the mission.
However, the prospect of Egyptian forces participating in AUSSOM has faced significant opposition from Ethiopia and several of its regional allies in Somalia. The controversy surrounding Egypt’s role continues to escalate, with Ethiopia raising concerns about the implications of such an involvement.
Simultaneously, talks between Somalia and Ethiopia are ongoing, centered on Ethiopia’s possible contribution to the mission. Sources suggest that Mogadishu is imposing certain conditions on the deployment of Ethiopian troops, further complicating the negotiations.
As these diplomatic efforts unfold, the outcome remains uncertain, with key regional powers strategically maneuvering to shape the mission’s final composition and objectives.
