HARGEISA, Somalia — Former Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Silanyo passed away on Friday in Hargeisa, Somaliland TV announced. He was 86.
During his presidency, Silanyo was known for his efforts in promoting stability and development within the self-declared republic, which has sought international recognition since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. His tenure saw various infrastructure improvements and initiatives aimed at fostering peace with neighboring regions.
Flags across Somaliland are expected to be flown at half-mast, and a state funeral is being organized to honor Silanyo’s contributions to the nation. The current president, Muse Bihi Abdi, issued a statement expressing condolences and recognizing Silanyo’s legacy as a leader who worked tirelessly for Somaliland’s progress and unity.
