Ex-Somaliland President Silanyo Dies at 86, Leaves Legacy of Stability

Silanyo, who led Somaliland from 2010 to 2017, was elected through a popular vote in 2010, taking office for a term initially set to last five years. His administration was extended by two years due to electoral delays, and he peacefully transferred power to Muse Bihi Abdi in November 2017.

During his presidency, Silanyo was known for his efforts in promoting stability and development within the self-declared republic, which has sought international recognition since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. His tenure saw various infrastructure improvements and initiatives aimed at fostering peace with neighboring regions.

Flags across Somaliland are expected to be flown at half-mast, and a state funeral is being organized to honor Silanyo’s contributions to the nation. The current president, Muse Bihi Abdi, issued a statement expressing condolences and recognizing Silanyo’s legacy as a leader who worked tirelessly for Somaliland’s progress and unity.
