Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The former President of Somalia Sheikh Sharif Ahmed today accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of prioritising personal political interests over the national interest. In a press conference at his Mogadishu residence, Sheikh Sharif highlighted significant security threats faced by businesses in four Mogadishu districts. He said: “As you know, businesses in four Mogadishu districts are closed due to instructions from Al-Shabaab. Traders are torn between following government instructions to install closed-circuit cameras on their premises or following instructions from Al-Shabaab to defy the government policy. In this situation, it is absurd to accuse any person of opposing one person, one vote elections. The atmosphere is not conducive to one person, one vote elections.”
The former president also criticised Villa Somalia’s initiative to amend the draft federal constitution, emphasising that a constitution should be based on consensus. He noted that the guidelines for constitutional amendments require open discussion on the articles of the constitution and pointed out that the government proposed amendments to four articles in the constitution.
Both Puntland State of Somalia and Jubaland State have rejected the declaration issued by the National Consultative Council regarding the modalities for conducting one person, one vote elections.
