MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Puntland authorities have clarified that their disagreement with the federal government is not related to the appointment of Hamza Abdi Barre, who hails from outside the region, as Prime Minister, asserting that the issue arises from deviations from the agreed-upon constitution, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.
Puntland Vice President Ilyas Elmi Lugator stated that they would not recognize any federal government that strays from the constitution and the principles they have agreed upon, regardless of whether it is led by someone from the region.
The semi-autonomous region is prepared to resolve its differences with the federal government if its leadership recommits to following the constitution, he added.
Puntland authorities refused to attend a meeting of the regional and federal leaders that kicked off in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday amid escalating tensions.
