MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab said on Tuesday it killed 89 soldiers and seized 20 vehicles in a dawn attack on army base outside the coastal town of Kismayo.
Militants stormed a base in Janay Abdalle village near Kismayo, the seat of power for Jubaland authorities, briefly taking its control, weeks after regional leadership promised to launch an offensive aimed at retaking key districts from the insurgents.
Insurgents used explosive-laden vehicles to blast their way into the camp, according to local media.
Troops stationed in the camp took control of the small village several weeks ago and were expected to take part in military operations against militants in the Middle and Lower Juba regions.
