MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia is planning to quit its bid for the chairperson of the African Union commission after pressure from Kenya which is also seeking to secure the top job, Somali MP and former ambassador to the EU Ali Saeed Fiqi said.
Fiqi said that authorities are planning to pressure former Foreign Minister Fowsiya Yusuf Haji Adan to withdraw her candidacy for the chairperson of the AU commission, adding that such a move will be a significant blow to the country.
“It’s unfortunate that it is being reported that Somalia is quitting the race for the leadership of the African Union commission,” he said.
“The position of the AUC has a heavyweight impact, not only that it is crucial for the country, but it also raises our national status.”
