Addis Ababa, May 10, 2024(Addis Walta) MadeInEthiopia Movement helped the industry sector increase its contribution to the overall GDP of the country following the measures taken to resolve the bottlenecks in the sector, Minister of Industry Melaku Alebel remarked.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially inaugurated ‘MadeInEthiopia Expo at the Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa.
‘Made In Ethiopia’ is a national manufacturing industry movement that was launched two years ago by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed with the objective of boosting the competitiveness of the sector by solving the bottlenecks in a sustainable, integrated, and comprehensive manner.
The 5-day expo depicts the activities and achievements of the movement over the past two years.
It attracted more than 230 industries engaged in various sectors including leather and leather products, textile and garment, food and drinks, woods and wood products, chemicals, construction, automobile, machinery, and electronics among others will participate at the expo.
Besides Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the event was attended by chief regional administrators, ministers, higher government officials resident ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Industry Melaku Alebel stated that tangible results have been registered in improving the industrial sector’s performance since the nationwide movement’s inception.
By implementing the focus areas, it has been possible to upgrade the production capacity of industries from 47 to 56 percent in a relatively shorter period, the minister added.
He mentioned that the share of the sector has also grown to 39 percent of the GDP.
The country substituted import products worth 1.9 Billion USD over the past nine months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year by enhancing domestic production through measures taken by the movement.
The minister further noted that as a result of expos that were organized in different parts of the country over the year, market linkage worth 10.7 billion Birr was achieved.
He added that the expo opened yesterday will further help to accelerate the pace of market linkage in the sector.
