MGADISHU, Somalia – The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) has held a colorful event on Wednesday to commemorate the International Workers’ Day in Somali capital Mogadishu.
The ceremony, which was attended by government officials, trade unions, women and civil society organizations, has focused on addressing the widespread issue of unemployment and underemployment in Somalia as well as promoting and realizing the National Employment Policy’s judicious implementation.
FESTU and its affiliated unions said that prioritizing the expansion of employment opportunities, particularly for the youth and marginalized groups could move Somalia towards a more inclusive and robust economic landscape.
They also called for the full and effective implementation of the National Policy on Occupational Safety and Health, which trade unions said would help mitigate risks and reduce the incidence of workplace injuries and fatalities.
Speaking at the event, FESTU General Secretary Omar Faruk Osman, addressed the importance of May Day for Somali workers.
On the other hand, The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) stands in solidarity with the historic move to a direct vote system in Somalia in 2026. This decision announced by PM Hamza marks a significant milestone towards a more transparent, inclusive, and democratic electoral process in which Somalis will elect their leaders.
