MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is set to embark on a diplomatic visit to Egypt this week for high-level discussions with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The talks are poised to center around fortifying bilateral relations, as well as the planned deployment of Egyptian troops to Somalia.
Currently in Switzerland, President Mohamud is expected to arrive in Cairo late Wednesday, following an agreement he recently signed to fully normalize relations with Ethiopia—Egypt’s longstanding regional rival.
Amid the ongoing diplomatic developments, President Mohamud is anticipated to reassure President el-Sisi that his recent rapprochement with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will not undermine the strategic tripartite alliance between Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea. This alliance has been a cornerstone for joint efforts in safeguarding Somalia’s waters against any potential Ethiopian encroachment.
Earlier this month, Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, visited Cairo in an effort to address Egypt’s concerns regarding the recent agreement between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, providing reassurances that it will not threaten the enduring cooperation among the three nations.
