MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in northeastern Somalia’s Puntland state said on Monday that at least 20 ISIS militants were killed in fierce clashes near the commercial port city of Bosaso, marking the first significant confrontation since regional security forces launched a military operation against the group last week.
The fighting erupted in the Dhaban’ad Valley, about 13 km from Balidhidin town in the Bari region, at approximately 8:00 am, according to Mohamed Mohamud Ahmed, a spokesperson for Puntland’s security forces.
The battle ensued after ISIS militants launched a multifaceted assault, employing explosives, booby-trapped drones, mortars, and infantry, the official added.
The regional security official confirmed that two soldiers were killed and three others wounded when their vehicle was struck by an explosive device during the attack.
