MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A demonstration took place on Sunday in Kismayo, a coastal town in southern Somalia, as protesters expressed strong opposition to the Somali government’s flight embargo imposed on Jubaland. Participants denounced President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s policies, with many demanding his resignation, accusing his administration of deepening national divisions rather than fostering unity.
Videos circulating on social media showcased dozens of protesters carrying placards that sharply criticized both the president and his government. This demonstration follows a recent declaration by Jubaland authorities, stating their intent to independently engage with the international community. Furthermore, they announced that foreign aid designated for the region will no longer be channeled through the federal government.
This political unrest comes in the wake of the Somali government’s flight bans on multiple towns controlled by Jubaland. The restrictions followed a series of military defeats, in which Somali government forces were repelled in their attempts to oust Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe, resulting in the government’s withdrawal from key towns in the Lower Juba and Gedo regions.
