Garowe (PP News Desk) — The President of Puntland State of Somalia, Said Abdullahi Deni, who arrived in Garowe today for a brief visit, laid the foundation stone for Puntland’s largest hospital.
President Said Deni praised the initiative to build a hospital “that meets international health care standards.” He described the project as a historic step.
“The health care needs of Somali people are significant given the tribulations they have experienced over the last thirty-plus years. Before 1991, regions in Puntland State did not receive a fair share of health care investment by the state. However, that underinvestment was something we shared with other regions. I am pleased to see that investment in small businesses has now resulted in the confidence to invest in larger businesses that deliver services and boost the economy. This progress contributes to peace and development in Puntland State” President Deni said.
Dr. Darman Aden, MD, FACP, who represents IHS Health LLC—the company funding the construction of the project—said that he was honoured to witness the laying of the foundation stone for a hospital in Garowe that will contribute to meeting the health care needs of people in this region and other parts of Somalia.
“We appreciate the sincerity and support provided by the Puntland State government. Equally, we commend the role of the Garowe district commissioner in this initiative,” said Dr. Darman.
This is the first health care project of its kind to be funded by a company dedicated to delivering health care services and conducting clinical investigations.
