The Government of Ethiopia today appointed Senior diplomat and former foreign affairs minister Taye Atske Selassie Amde as a new president.
He sworn in at the parliament this morning. The position of president in Ethiopia is more ceremonial as the prime minister is the key decision-making position as per the constitution. His appointment came following the end of the first term presidency of Sahle-Work Zewde who is also a veteran diplomat with work experiences as top official in the UN.
Taye Atske Selassie Amde was appointed a few months ago as foreign minister of Ethiopia. Before that he served, he served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations.
A few days ago President Sahle-Work Zewde signaled her plan not to continue for the second term by twitting that shows her frustration and failed attempts from over a year to change things. Listing some of the famous singers, she said: “silence is my answer’.
