HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) -Somaliland’s supreme court on Monday ordered the release of opposition MP Mohamed Abib, who had been detained for a month at a prison near the port city of Berbera.
The court ruled that the MP’s arrest was unlawful, following a unanimous vote by the regional parliament to maintain his immunity, which complicated the government’s efforts to keep him detained and undermine his political career.
In a statement to local television, the MP confirmed his release and expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him during the 30 days he was “illegally” detained in Mandera prison.
