MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday dismissed local media reports that his government is planning to attend Qatar-brokered talks with the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab.
The Somali President did not rule out possible talks in the future if “there is something that belong to both of us, that we both agree on.”
Mohamud also stressed that there is no indication that Ethiopia is planning to walk back a controversial memorandum of understanding with Somaliland that grants Addis Ababa access to a leased land along the Red Sea. Somalia called the deal a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The remarks come hours after delegations from Mogadishu and Addis Ababa met in Turkey for their first face-to-face talks since January, though attempts to pressure Addis Ababa to cancel the deal with Somaliland have produced no fruitful results.
