MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The manager of Somalia’s Aviation Agency Ahmed Moalim Hassan has announced plans for the construction of a new airport in Mogadishu aimed at alleviating overcrowding issues currently faced by Adan Adde Airport, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.
The decision comes amidst concerns over the increasing number of flights arriving daily, which strained the capacity of the existing airport. According to the official, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has directed the agency to develop a comprehensive plan for the construction of the new airport to enhance aviation safety and efficiency while addressing the overcrowding problems.
The official highlighted the necessity of this initiative, emphasizing that the new airport will be strategically located in El Ma’an, an area situated on the outskirts of Mogadishu. This location was chosen following meticulous assessments of various factors including topography and climate suitability. It has been determined that El Ma’an offers the ideal conditions for constructing an airport that will accommodate a significantly larger number of flights, thereby ensuring smoother operations and improved aviation services for passengers and airlines alike.
Furthermore, the planned airport is expected to be expansive enough to handle the growing demands of air traffic in Mogadishu, aiming to provide a modern and efficient gateway for domestic and international flights. The agency anticipates that the development of this new facility will not only ease congestion at Adan Adde Airport but will also contribute to enhancing Somalia’s overall aviation infrastructure, aligning with broader efforts to bolster economic and logistical capabilities in the country.
