MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s government has asked the United Nations to end its political mission in Somalia known as (UNSOM) by the end of October 2024 as Mogadishu seeks increased international support ahead of ATMIS exit.
Somali authorities say the decision was reached after “consideration of our strategic priorities”, adding that “Somali Government will no longer request mandate renewal of resolution 2705(2023).”
In a letter addressed to the UN Security Council, Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said: “We believe that it is now appropriate to transition to the next phase of our partnership. We are confident that the achievements and lessons learned during the mission’s presence will continue to guide our efforts towards sustaining peace and prosperity.”
