MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday presided over a welcoming ceremony for a Turkish warship, which docked the seaport of the capital Mogadishu, his office said, months after his government had signed a new defense cooperation agreement with Ankara.
“In his address aboard the navy warship, the President emphasized the strategic partnership between Türkiye and Somalia, particularly in the areas of humanitarian aid, security, defence, and economic development,” his office said in a statement.
Mohamud stressed that the warship’s visit to the Somali coastline was a “sign of the enduring fraternal relations between the two brotherly nations and a new dawn for Somalia’s maritime security.”
Turkey will provide maritime security to Somalia and will also train and equip the Somali navy to be able to secure the country’s territorial waters as both Somali and Turkish authorities confirmed shortly after the deal was signed in February.
