MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A dispute between Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh and the leaders of the Federal Member States (FMS) continues to escalate over controversial changes in the constitution, days after a scheduled meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC) was delayed.
Mohamud has been facing opposition from authorities in northeastern Somalia’s Puntland state, who have recently withdrew their recognition of the federal government in response to the parliament’s endorsement of controversial amendments in the constitution.
At least two other states have now broke ranks with Mohamud, raising their concerns over his move to rescind an agreement he had signed with state presidents during a meeting last week.
Among the issues in the epicenter of the dispute are the selection of the electoral commission and using their term of leaders and not presidents in reference to the heads of the federal member states, which contradict the last agreement between regional states and the federal government.
