Hargeisa (PP Editorial) — The detention of Dr. Abdirahman Kulmiye, a Somali-Australian citizen, in Hargeisa, allegedly on false espionage charges by Somaliland authorities, raises concerns about the political judgement of its leaders and civil society.
In 2015, Puntland government released poet Gama’diid, thanks to advocacy by traditional leaders and evidence showing baseless charges. However, in the case of Dr. Kulmiye, neither civil society nor the Somaliland Human Rights Center in Hargeisa has ensured his rights amidst conflict in Sool.
Detained by order of Interior Minister Mohamed Kahin, Dr. Kulmiye’s detention risks damaging the bond of free movement between Puntland and Somaliland territories. It is imperative for Somaliland authorities to release Dr. Kulmiye promptly to prevent irreparable damage to inter-clan and civilian relationships, and enable him to seek remedies for unlawful detention.
