MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s parliament on Saturday unanimously approved a series of constitutional amendments as opposition warns against transition to a one-man rule as the new chapters expand the powers of the President while limiting the role of parliament.
The speaker of parliament Adan Mohamed Nur said all 254 MPs and senators at the session voted in favor of the new changes in what authorities say is a decisive and historic move.
Opposition leaders and the President of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland earlier said that they would not accept the unilateral amendments and would not recognize the outcome of the parliament vote.
Former Somali spy chief Fahad Yasin said on Friday that the United Arab Emirates was spearheading the work to overhaul the constitution to throw the country deeper into chaos and usher in the secession of at least two more regions. read more
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud vowed that he would forge ahead with plans to overhaul the constitution despite criticism from the opposition, ignoring the country’s decades-long political tradition of seeking a broad-based consensus on controversial issues, including constitutional reviews and elections.
