Addis Ababa, February 2024(Walta Addis) The United Nations (UN) is working in partnership with the African Union and other regional organizations to achieve the goal of “African solutions for African problems,” according to Hanna Tetteh, the UN Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa.
In an exclusive interview with ENA, Tetteh discussed the joint partnership on peace and security between the UN and the AU, which was formalized in a 2017 agreement.
According to the agreement, the UN and AU work together by conducting joint consultations, assessments, planning, and implementation.
Tetteh stressed the importance of a strong partnership among all member states of the UN and regional organizations, with a particular emphasis on finding African solutions to African problems.
During the interview, Tetteh also addressed current security challenges on the continent, particularly the situation in Sudan.
She emphasized the need for measures to prevent conflict and humanitarian crises and stressed the importance of negotiation to resolve disputes and bring stability.
The UN deploys peacekeeping missions to intervene between hostile parties and maintain peace after negotiations have been completed.
In this regard, Tetteh emphasized the importance of facilitating negotiations between parties who are normally at odds with each other, to bring relief to affected populations.
