The Mogadishu market exhibition, an annual event that showcases the products and services of local businesses, opened on Wednesday in the Somali capital.
The exhibition, which is in its fifth edition, was inaugurated by the governor of Banadir region, Sheikh Yusuf Hussein Jimale Madale, who commended the young entrepreneurs who have brought innovation and diversity to the market.
“The youth are the backbone of our economy and our future. They have shown us that they can create and compete in any field. They have also benefited from the opportunities and resources that the government has provided for them,” Madale said.
The exhibition features 300 business companies from various sectors, such as agriculture, technology, education, health, and entertainment. The organizers expect about 30,000 visitors to attend the three-day event, which aims to promote trade and creativity among the Somali people.
One of the exhibitors, Abdiweli Ahmed, who runs a solar energy company, said he was happy to participate in the exhibition and showcase his products.
“I have been in this business for two years and I have seen a lot of demand for solar energy in Somalia. It is cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable than the grid. I hope this exhibition will help me reach more customers and expand my network,” Ahmed said.
Another exhibitor, Fadumo Hassan, who owns a fashion brand, said she was proud to display her designs and share her story.
“I started my business with a sewing machine and a few fabrics. I wanted to create clothes that reflect the Somali culture and identity, but also appeal to the modern and global market. I have been able to employ 10 women and train them in tailoring and design. This exhibition is a great opportunity for me to showcase my work and inspire other women,” Hassan said.
The Mogadishu market exhibition is supported by the Somali government, the United Nations, and several local and international partners. The event is part of the efforts to revive the economy and the social fabric of Somalia, which has been recovering from decades of conflict and instability.
