Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Villa Somalia plan to make amendments to the draft federal constitution faces a hurdle following a communique issued by federal MPs and Senators from Puntland State of Somalia, who held a meeting in Mogadishu. In the communique they warned against basing consequential national decisions on personal objectives, and urged other MPs and Senators to prevent any steps that can damage the integrity of the bicameral house, state-building initiatives and the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
“We are concerned about the recklessness through which the executive branch aims to effect amendments to the draft constitution without conducting extensive national consultations on the declaration from the National Consultative Forum. We oppose the process to make amendments to the draft constitution” reads the communique.
They cited articles 54 and 137 of the draft constitution on extensive national political consultations to seek input from federal member states in a consensus-based manner to bring to the attention of the national leaders that the absence of Puntland State of Somalia sheds light on the executive power-grab.
