Addis Ababa, October 12, 2023 (Addis Walta) The Ethiopian Government rejected the report by the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide on the situation in Ethiopia calling it “irresponsible and reckless”.
The Ethiopian Permanent Mission in the United Nations released a statement dated October 11, 2023, indicating the report by the Special Advisor is prepared based on inaccurate and unreliable report from the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE).
The report by the Special Advisor is, therefore, flawed and far-fetched and the Ethiopian Government finds the unsubstantiated and inflammatory report deeply regrettable.
Ethiopia is committed to implementing the Pretoria Peace Agreement under African Union (AU) led mediation.
The government is in the final stages of formulating a Transitional Justice Policy to ensure accountability and justice as well as embarking on nationwide dialogue through the National Dialogue Commission, which set out to address past and present grievances and to forge a peaceful future for all Ethiopians.
By pooling the international community’s support Ethiopia is working hard for implementation of the Peace Agreement, including supporting the rehabilitation and reconstruction of conflict-affected areas.
The statement indicated that “Ethiopia thus rejects the Special Advisor’s flawed assessment of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.”
The Special Advisor’s report indicating the agreement to cease hostilities in the country “has ‘failed’ is false the Special Advisor must retract her inaccurate statement that stands contrary to the consolidation of peace in the country,” according to MFA of Ethiopia.
