A colourful bike is loosely tied to a bushy picket fence around the Medhanit Fabrica area. While bike lanes exist in some parts of Addis Abeba’s roads, cycling has not been adopted to a marked degree despite the shortage of public transportation alternatives. An ambitious project to launch a non-motorised system by the Addis Abeba Transport Bureau in 2017 through the purchase of several bicycles ended in 27 million Br losses. Under the UN-sponsored Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Strategy 2020-2029, Ethiopia’s Transport Ministry is working to endorse wider adoption of bicycles as part of an initiative to cut down on carbon missions.
