MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 33 pro-government fighters were killed after Al-Shabaab militants ambushed them near the town of Wisil in central Somalia’s Mudug region on Wednesday.
A senior army officer and officials with the Galkayo local administration were among the dead.
Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, saying it killed 58 soldiers and seized three vehicles.
The attack took place near Shabelow forest between the town of Wisil and Ba’adwayn, a town which had been captured by government troops and allied clan militias a few weeks ago.
At least 10 pro-government fighters wounded when they were mistakenly bombed by a helicopter believed to be operated by one of the Horn of Africa country’s international partners, a Somali army official told Reuters news agency.
