MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s army on Monday withdrew from several towns in the central region of Galgadud after a deadly militant attack on a military camp on Saturday.
Troops vacated the towns of Wabho, Osweyne and Budbud in a surprise move after militants were able to kill soldiers and capture a number of armored military vehicles.
Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants said they had killed 178 soldiers. Former deputy mayor of Mogadishu Ali Yare put the vehicles destroyed or captured by the rebels at 58.
Local media reported on Monday reported that troops also emptied the towns of Gal’ad and Masagaway in what appears to be a significant blow to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s two-year-long all-out against the Al-Qaeda affiliate.
