MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A mortar shell explosion killed at least 27 people, mainly children, near the town of Qoryoley in south Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region on Friday.
At least 53 others wounded in the explosion, according to the Somali state media.
“This disaster happened today near Qoryoley town. They were playing with a mortar shell that did not go off. It exploded on them. Twenty of them died and others are injured,” Abdi Ahmed, deputy district commissioner of Qoryoley told journalists.
Residents said that the mortar shell was fired by Ugandan troops overnight, though there has been no comment from the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
