As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and global warming, the demand for green and clean energy has grown exponentially. Fortunately, Africa has not been left behind in this important endeavor. Green energy companies such as Mkopa in Kenya and Tanzania and Siemens Gamesa in Ethiopia have emerged in East Africa. Green Energy Enterprise Ltd (GEEL) Power is pioneering renewable energy in Somalia.
GEEL Power is a Somali-owned green energy company that specializes in developing scalable and bankable off-grid utility solutions that are tailored to meet the needs and budgets of their clients. The company identifies off-grid and on-grid systems for small and medium-sized villages and towns, as well as commercial and industrial operations. It then designs a solar power plant in tandem with a battery storage system (BESS) that is customized to the needs of the customer.
The company provides solar power systems that can be installed on the premises of commercial and industrial businesses.
Alternatively, corporations that want to switch to solar energy without owning and operating a solar system in-house can enter into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with GEEL Power. Under the PPA, GEEL Power will provide solar power to the corporation for a fixed monthly fee. In doing so, GEEL Power finances the construction and maintenance of the system for the duration of the PPA.
For organizations that want to own and operate their solar power system but do not have the investment capital to purchase it, GEEL Power offers a ‘lease to own’ option. In this case, they buy the generated energy for a fixed monthly fee for the duration of the lease.
Currently, GEEL Power is building an independent power plant in Mogadishu that will generate 100 megawatts (MW) of power, enough to power 500,000 households. As an independent power producer (IPP), GEEL will collaborate with local energy service providers to increase the amount of green-generated electricity in the city. To complete this project, the company will rely on local partners and labor, which will result in the creation of numerous job opportunities.
In a country with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and electricity prices ranging from $0.35 to $1.20 per kilowatt hour (kWh), GEEL Power provides a solution for transitioning to green energy. The solar power plant in Mogadishu not only provides affordable and reliable energy but also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the amount of diesel-generated electricity in the city.
Somalia has no national power grid and is the world’s largest operator of mini-grid and off-grid solutions. Unfortunately, 90% of these mini- and off-grid systems are powered by diesel generators. Our goal is to work with ESP to gradually increase the amount of green energy for your mini- and off-grid facilities. We will build more IPP projects nationwide to ensure all Somalis have access to reliable, affordable and cleaner energy.

The Mogadishu plant, which is still under construction, has the potential to become the largest in East Africa. Electricity prices will be reduced as a result of this project, which will undoubtedly boost Mogadishu’s economy and attract foreign investment into the country. The company is seeking partnerships with investors and innovators to build and operate not only the Mogadishu plant but also other renewable energy projects in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.
GEEL Power‘s commitment is to provide sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy solutions that improve the quality of life for Somalis by providing low-cost electricity while protecting the environment.
With its innovative approach to renewable energy, the company is paving the way for a better future for Somalia and the entire region.
