MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Efforts by Ethiopia’s government to mediate an end to the conflict between Somaliland authorities and local forces in the northern Somali town of Lasanod have come to an abysmal failure, Caasimada Online news website reported on Wednesday.
It came after elders in the war-hit town insisted that they would not open talks with Somaliland until authorities of the breakaway region withdraw their troops from Sool region. Somaliland leadership also insisted that the elders must declare that Lasanod part of the region if negotiations are to begin to end the weeks-long clashes.
Hundreds of people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced since the fighting erupted in the strategic northern Somali town early last month.
