The Secretary General of the Upper House of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Abdinasir Ibrahim Guled, recently participated in the general meeting of The Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP), held in Manama, Bahrain.
During the meeting, the Executive Committee of the Secretaries of the World Parliaments voted on whether Somalia should join the organization. A majority vote approved the inclusion allowing Somalia to join the Association alongside other countries.
The Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments is a consultative body of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and its main goal is to facilitate personal contact between holders of the office of Secretary-General in any Parliamentary Assembly, whether such Assembly is a Member of the Union or not.
Moreover, the association studies the law, procedure, practice, and working methods of different parliaments, and proposes measures for improving those methods and for securing cooperation between the services of various Parliaments.
Therefore, this move is critical in promoting parliamentary cooperation and collaboration on a global level. It will allow the country to work closely with other members of the association, exchange experiences, and gain insights on best practices for parliamentary administration. The membership will also provide parliament with a platform to share their knowledge and contribute to the development of the association.
Mr. Guled’s participation in the meeting and his role in securing Somalia’s membership is a testament to the efforts of the government and parliament specifically in strengthening ties with other parliaments and countries globally. The membership is expected to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our parliament which will ultimately benefit the nation.
