HARGEISA [SMN] – The president of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, said that it is necessary to hold timely elections for a president based on the party system in the breakaway region.
Speaking at a press conference in Hargeisa, Bihi described impossible Somalialand to be without elections once every 5 years, as he recently extended his term by 2 more years.
He instructed the election committee to seek the way to conduct the election without delay.
The presidential election was postponed last year after a prolonged dispute between the president and the opposition parties, which has not yet been fully resolved.
Bihi’s remarks come as Somaliland lost the key city of Las Anod to unionists from Dhulbahante clan in January following weeks of bloody conflict in Sool region.
The President said that he welcomes anyone who helps in the peace of Las Anod, but the one who comes to the solution should be someone who believes that it is an issue within Somaliland, and he warned Puntland of interference in Sool.
