MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s government has formally lodged a protest with Kenya following alleged violation of Somali airspace by a Kenya-registered aircraft, which transported Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe from Kismayo to Nairobi, despite an ongoing air blockade in the region.
In response, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Kenyan ambassador in Mogadishu, demanding an immediate and thorough explanation for the incident.
It comes after Ahmed Madobe’s defiant departure on Saturday, in direct violation of the air embargo imposed on his region. It marks his first trip abroad since his controversial re-election late last year, which the federal government has denounced as both corrupt and unconstitutional. Additionally, Madobe is facing treason charges, as indicated by his summons from a Mogadishu court.
Reports suggest that Madobe intends to travel from Kenya to the United Arab Emirates, though the exact purpose of his visit remains uncertain. Contradictory reports have emerged, with some speculating that he may seek medical treatment, while others claim he intends to meet with Emirati officials.
Should Kenya fail to provide a satisfactory explanation for the alleged airspace violation, there are growing concerns that relations between Mogadishu and Nairobi could once again descend into a cycle of heightened tensions and diplomatic discord, undermining the positive trajectory of their bilateral ties over the past two years.
