Addis Abeba– Transportation in parts of East Gojjam, as well as South and East Wollo zones in the Amhara Region, has been disrupted since Tuesday due to roadblocks reportedly imposed by Fano militants, according to residents who spoke with Addis Standard.
A resident of Debre Markos, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, said transportation came to a standstill on 10 December 2024, following directives allegedly issued by the group.
“No vehicles have moved between towns for two days. There are no vehicles entering Debre Markos or leaving for other towns. Everyone is too afraid to move,” the resident said.
The roadblocks, the resident added, are reportedly linked to demands made by the militants, who are “pressuring government security forces.” This has caused significant transportation disruptions.
A resident of Bahir Dar confirmed the situation, stating that roads from Bahir Dar to Dangila, Kosober, Debre Markos, Finote Selam, and Bure have been blocked since early this week. He also mentioned that urgent travel, including a family member’s planned trip to Injibara, has been impossible.
Additionally, shortages of supplies have been reported due to transportation disruptions caused by recurring security issues in the region.
Similarly, Abel Tesfaye, a resident of Dessie, told Addis Standard that roads from Dessie to Wurgessa and Wuchale are also blocked, citing ongoing security challenges.
Transportation across the Amhara Region has frequently been affected by clashes between government security forces and Fano militants.
Previously, Addis Standard reported that transportation activities in the Amhara Region had been suspended indefinitely starting 3 October 2024, following escalating violence, including heavy fighting between government forces and Fano militants. AS
