MOGADISHU, Somalia – The commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, SODMA, Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, today took over one million dollars in aid from the Chinese government.
“FEI Shengchao handed over 1 million US dollars in emergency flood relief assistance to H.E. Commissioner Mohamud Moallim in SoDMA. It’s the 3rd time this year that China to supported disaster relief since the severe floods hit the country,” said the Chinese embassy.
The donated money is aimed to help the people affected by the El Niño and the floods caused by the Jubba and Shabelle rivers. Somalia was also hit by a prolonged drought.
“The Chinese ambassador who came to SoDMA gave us one million dollars for the flood victims, it will be spent on food. I am very grateful to the Chinese government and its people. This is not the first time,” said SoDMA head.
Abdulle said that the Chinese government is different from other governments since it directly helps the Somali people. China was the first country to provide direct assistance to Somalia since the severe floods hit this country.
Recently the Chinese government donated financial aid to the federal government, which helped mitigate the humanitarian crisis in Jubaland, which is the most flood-hit area.
